The Unveiling of free wi-fi hotspots and switching on of JL Dube Broadband Highsite

The 9th July 2020 marked the beginning of the digital revolution as inspired by the first President of a democratic South Africa Nelson Mandela who once remarked: “It always seems impossible until it is done.” For the first time, communities in Pietermaritzburg who have always battled to access internet will have access to free Wi-Fi.

On the 9th of July 2020 , The MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube-Ncube and the Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams switched on a JL Dube Broadband Highsite in Vezokuhle Primary School, Edendale under Umsunduzi Local Municipality.

The long term vision is to turn KZN into a Smart Province through the digital infrastructure. The model takes advantage of SA Connect, the BBI long haul fibre backbone as well as the Dube iConnect ISP services and infrastructure.
