The Unveiling of Free wi-fi Hotspots and Switching on of JL Dube Broadband Highsite
The 9th July 2020 marked the beginning of the digital revolution as inspired by the first President of a democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who once remarked: “It always seems impossible until it is done.” For the first time, communities in Pietermaritzburg who have always battled to access the internet will have access to free Wi-Fi.
On the 9th of July 2020, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube-Ncube, and the Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, switched on a JL Dube Broadband Highsite in Vezokuhle Primary School, Edendale under Umsunduzi Local Municipality.
The long-term vision is to turn KZN into a Smart Province through the digital infrastructure. The model takes advantage of SA Connect, the BBI long-haul fibre backbone, as well as the Dube iConnect ISP services and infrastructure.
